Thrissur: Admission to 450 MBBS seats across four medical colleges in Kerala for the upcoming academic year has been temporarily put on hold. The institutions faced action after they had failed to meet the medical commission guidelines in a inspection. Now the colleges have to fix the issues and get a clearance in the upcoming inspection, before admitting students.

The permission to admit students was denied by the Under Graduate Medical Education Board which functions under the National Medical Commission. The restriction has been imposed on Sree Gokulam Medical College in Venjaramoodu, Jubilee Mission Medical College in Thrissur, and Dr. CSI Somervell Medical College and Sree Uthradom Thirunal Academy of Medical Sciences in Thiruvananthapuram. While Gokulam and Somervell medical colleges have 150 seats each, SUT has 100 seats, and Jubilee has 50 seats.

While the medical commision spotted shortage of teachers in two colleges, shortage of patients and flaws in conducting exams put the other colleges in a spot of bother. At present, the college authorities are trying to fix the issues pointed out by the commission.

It should be noted that the medical commission’s approval is mandatory for setting up medical colleges. Inspection by the commision will be done in these colleges every year. The efficiency of the colleges in conducting examinations and training their students will be strictly evaluated.
