TVK Chief Vijay Faces Fatwa Over Alleged Anti-Muslim Portrayals in Films

Actor-politician Vijay, president of the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), has become the center of a growing controversy after a prominent cleric from Uttar Pradesh issued a fatwa against him. The cleric, Maulana Mufti Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, who is the national president of the All India Muslim Jamaat (AIMJ), accused TVK chief Vijay of portraying Muslims negatively in several of his films.

Fatwa Calls for Boycott of TVK Leader Vijay

The fatwa comes in response to a query from a Muslim individual in Chennai, who sought clarity regarding Vijay's public image and his recent political engagement. Maulana Razvi responded by warning the Muslim community of Tamil Nadu to “maintain distance” from TVK leader Vijay and refrain from supporting his political activities.

“Vijay has consistently presented Islam and Muslims in a bad light in his movies,” said Maulana Razvi. “He has projected Muslims as terrorists, which is not just misleading but deeply hurtful. His intentions seem to target the image of the Muslim community, and for this reason, Muslims should not support his political party.”

TVK Leader Controversy: Growing Religious and Political Tensions

The TVK leader controversy began gaining traction after Vijay hosted an Iftar party, which some groups claim was politically motivated. Critics argue that his recent engagement with Muslim traditions may be a strategy to gain votes, rather than genuine outreach. The fatwa has added further tension to his public image, especially among religious communities.

Cleric’s Message to the Tamil Muslim Community

In his statement, Maulana Razvi clearly urged Muslims in Tamil Nadu not to include TVK chief Vijay in religious events or community programs. He emphasized that supporting someone who, in his view, has misrepresented Islam, would be inappropriate and potentially harmful to the community’s dignity and values.
